Hesse Walter Karl Hesse was born on Sept. 15, 1913 in Rotgesbuttel, Germany to Carl and Anna (Schmidt) Hesse. He was baptized on Oct. 27, 1913. He was one of a set of fraternal twins. Walter died on Jan. 14, 1996 at the age of 82 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis. Walter emigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1924. They settled in East Central Minnesota. He attended school in Oxford Township and graduated from eighth grade. He was confirmed in 1927 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wyoming. As a young man he worked on a farm in southern Minnesota and also for a while in Washington state. He joined the Army in l942 at Ft. Snelling. He was stationed at Tinker Army Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, OK. While there he married Merle Florene Brewer on April 3, 1943. Soon after, he was transferred overseas and served in North Africa and Italy, where he was injured. After returning to the U.S. and spending several months in rehabilitation, he joined his wife in Minnesota. They settled in Oxford Township, where they have lived since. They farmed until he retired several years ago. Walter was always active in his community, having served terms on the Oxford Town Board and being a member of the VFW and DAV He was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Weber. Anyone who knew Walter could easily tell that family was his most important priority. He and his wife raised six children. His 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren filled his life with a great deal of pride, joy and hands-on activity. He was also called "Grandpa" by many neighborhood children. Walter is survived by his wife and six children and their spouses: Cheryl and Steven Bistodeau of North Branch, James and Connie Hesse of Lyndon Station, WI, Roy and Ginger Hesse of Stacy, Lois Gamelin of North Branch, Elaine White of Wyoming, Donald and Kris Hesse of Stacy; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Otto and Eleanore Hesse of North Branch; sister and brother-in-law Dorothea and Adolph Carlson of Jacobson; three sisters-in-law: Helen, Lucille and Hazel; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Walter was preceded in death by brothers: Karl, Henry and Wilhelm; sisters Hedwig and twin sister Gertrude. The funeral was Jan. 17 at St. John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Calvin Thompson officiating. Pall bearers were Justin Barfuss, Bernard Carlson, David Hals, Brian Hesse, Mike Miller and Guy Olson. Honorary pall bearers were Michael Hals, Jacob Hesse, Nicholas Hesse, Paul Hesse and Sean Hesse. Interment was at the church cemetery. Arrangements were by Carlson Funeral Home, Cambridge.
