Cheryl passed to God’s care on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at the age of 71 years. She was born on September 8, 1946 in Minneapolis, MN to Russell and Laverne (Munson) Hawkinson and was baptized in October 1946 at Fish Lake Lutheran Church. Cheryl and her sister Nola lived with their grandparents, Fred and Olga Hawkinson until the age of 2-1/2 years when Walter and Florene Hesse welcomed Cheryl into their home as their own daughter. They later had five more children, so she grew up in a big farm family in Oxford Township near Stacy, MN. Cheryl attended North Branch Public Schools and graduated in 1964. After graduation, she worked at St. Paul Fire and Marine Ins. Co. in St. Paul. In 1965, she married Keith (Rick) Hals. Their union was blessed with three wonderful children. Though later divorced, they and their new families remained close. All were very involved in raising, nurturing, and loving their children and grandchildren. In 1975, Cheryl met her soul mate, Steven Bistodeau. They were married on March 10, 1979 at Trinity Lutheran Church in North Branch. They had celebrated 38 years together when Steven passed away suddenly in 2013. Grandma and Grandpa B. were most happy when their granddaughters and grandsons came along. They loved to spend time with them and spoil them as much as possible. Beside working in St. Paul, Cheryl worked at the North Branch Bakery, drove school bus for North Branch Schools for six years, and worked at the Review Corporation (later North Branch Printing) for 33 years. Her last job was as a school keeper at Trinity Christian School, and later part-time custodian at Trinity Lutheran Church from 2007 until 2017. Cheryl and Steven joined Trinity in 1989. She remained active at Trinity since joining, serving six years on the Church Council and one year as the Council President. She was a member of the Senior Choir for 12 years and participated in several committees and groups. Cheryl truly treasured the many friendships she had at her church. Cheryl is survived by her children and their spouses, Suzanne (Lane) Hischer, David (Rhiannon) Hals, and Michael (Amanda) Hals, all of North Branch; her grandchildren, Mary and David Baltezore, Grace Hischer and Alec Schwab, and Carrie Hischer and Cole Zirbel, Nathan and Michael Hals, and Zane Hals; sisters, Nola Lofboom, Mary (Tony) Deets, Elaine (Bryon) Kubiszewski, and Lois (Craig) Dahl; brothers, Roy (Ginger) Hesse, James Hesse, and Donald (Dorothy) Hesse; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Douglas (Dayle) Bistodeau, Vickie LaBelle, Susan (Dennis) Lockwood, Holly (Tim) Fairbanks, Jeffrey (Kelly) Bistodeau, and Wayne (Natalie) Hokanson; aunts and uncle, Ruby Dike, Eleanor Hesse, and Adolph Carlson; many cherished nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend Marie Johnson. Cheryl was preceded in death by her husband Steven, parents Russell and Lavern Hawkinson, special parents Walter and Florene Hesse, brother-in-law Dennis Lofboom, Nephew Terry Lofboom, brother and sister-in-law John and Suzanne Bistodeau, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial services for Cheryl will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. A private family interment will take place at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.
